Mindfulness

16 July 2019

“Mindfulness is not only life changing but also saves lives”

At our July event, Michelle Locke took us on a tour of Mindfulness and shared some simple but amazing tools and techniques to explain how to recognise and change our thought patterns. She also showed us how we all see things in such a different way and how this affects how we feel about ourselves and other people. It was an evening of discovery for us!

Michelle says that Mindfulness can help people to understand their mind better and the connection between thoughts, feelings and behaviours and how these can impact and cause anxiety, depression, low moods and negativity. Mindfulness shows us how to understand and interrupt these patterns and to recognise what is real and what is thought.

From the event:

“Brilliant session. I’ve made progress in bringing mindfulness into my day and this has given me some more tips to use. Thank you :-)”

Unmasking the Impostor:

spotting and sorting impostor syndrome

17 July 2018

This session discussed the irrational but very ‘real’ self -doubt feeling known as Impostor Syndrome. It facilitated self-awareness, offered insight and provided tactics. Most importantly it opened up a conversation!
The session covered:
  • What is Impostor Syndrome
  • How to spot and sort it
  • Owning achievement
  • Getting rational with emotions
  • Being you in a ‘comparing world’

From the event:

Massive ‘yay’ to this event – cleared so much of the feelings I have had all my life!

Trisha was very engaging and clearly knowledgeable in her field. Her style was informal in the best way.

Thank you so much for another great evening! A great presentation by a brilliant facilitator. I feel more confident and have a better outlook already!

An excellent and useful session with the perfect balance of theory and activities.

Came away feeling motivated and inspired. Great to hear other people’s thoughts and feelings on the topic. Thank you!

What a great event tonight! Was having such a hard day at work and nearly didn’t attend, so glad I did. Re-energised!

Felt better that others are in the same boat. Friendly group.

Made me feel more human! Also not to put such high demands on myself.

Great event. It’s nice to talk about a subject that is difficult to bring up at work (a male-dominated environment).

This was just the top-up on this subject that I needed. Trisha was a great presenter.

Entertaining speaker on a very interesting and emotive subject.

This was my first event – thank you for having me and making me feel so welcome. I though Trisha was a fabulous speaker – so insightful and inspirational 🙂 I look forward to future events.

Great location and food. Enjoyed the presentation greatly.

Be True to Yourself With a Purpose Driven Life

17 April 2017

What a treat this event was!

We had a talk from Charly Young, CEO and co-founder of The Girls’ Network – an award-winning charity that matches girls from low income communities with a female mentor, in order to open networks and opportunities that the girls would otherwise not have access to. The Girls’ Network is our charity partner at Aspiring Women.

The power of women and girls supporting each other

How can we harness the experiences and energy of women to support girls and young women to be ambitious for their futures? To have the opportunities, the support and the confidence to discover and pursue their passions?

Charly shared her experiences as a secondary school teacher in one of the most disadvantaged communities in London, the challenges that the girls in her classroom were facing, and how this led her to establish a charity connecting women and girls.

She also talked about the ways in which The Girls’ Network are supporting more than 1,000 girls across the country each year, with the help of a fantastic network of women and men, and the impact that has been seen on the lives of the girls worked with.

After hearing Charly’s inspiring journey of finding and following her purpose Kelly led an exercise about understanding our purpose and how we can choose to be true to ourselves and lead a purpose driven life.

From the event:

‘It was a great event – love the network task’

‘Really inspiring session. Loved hearing about The Girls’ Network and having time to link that and discuss/reflect on our own personal passions’

‘Great session, finding out more about The Girls’ Network, the work they do and how to get involved’

‘A great event as always, with friendly, like-minded people’

‘Love the new venue! Fantastic topic and very inspiring to hear about The Girls’ Network. Good to hear where our money is going.’

‘Really enjoyed both presentations. Inspiring!’

‘Brilliant, was so glad I came. I have ideas, am re-motivated and feel really connected’

‘Location and car-parking very easy, thank you!’

Charly Young

Charly Young is CEO and Co-founder of The Girls’ Network

Prior to setting up The Girls’ Network, Charly trained as a secondary school teacher with Teach First in 2011, becoming an outstanding Geography and Citizenship teacher at a school in North West London.

It was then she saw first-hand the double disadvantages faced by the girls in her classroom. Challenges born from the expectations placed on them to look a certain way, act a certain way, pursue certain types of ‘female’ careers or life choices. And those stemming from the fact that they know no professional women, or could see no one like them in the roles or careers to which they might aspire.

It was this that inspired her to set up The Girls’ Network.

Charly has spoken at various conferences and events, including the 2014 ASGS annual conference and TEDx Youth. She has written articles for publications including the Guardian and the Huffington Post and has been approached by BBC Radio 4 and Radio 5 Live to contribute to discussions on education and girls.

Following a career working in Marketing, Communication and Relationship Management related roles for 15 years, during the start of its LEAN transformation programme, I volunteered for the opportunity to learn about continuous improvement whilst working at the RNLI and haven’t looked back since.

Moving onto LV= I worked in the General Insurance Operational change team and subsequently headed up the Continuous Improvement team within Technology.

Whilst at LV= I was part of the team that set up its first Women’s network and now working at JP Morgan I am an active participant in its many diversity programmes.

In September 2016 I gave birth to our son Xander, after years of focus on my career he’s certainly given me a chance to step back and appreciate life. He brings me tremendous joy every day and I feel very blessed.

Volunteering for Aspiring Women is my small way of paying it forward. I also love festivals, camping in our VW and creating our dream home.

Making Time for Mindfulness

Making Time For Mindfulness

18 October 2016

You asked and we delivered!

October’s event was all about Mindfulness – a subject popularly requested.

Scott Brown of Zen Balance took us through managing everyday stress with some mindfulness techniques he’s learnt on his journey from competitive athlete and city trader to Yoga and Mindfulness teacher in Dorset.

Scott said:

It seems in modern living that we can be caught up in lot of stress and anxiety about any number of issues. The talk will broadly look at how we can, with awareness, manage everyday stress, the roles we take on in life and a look at time pressure.

There will be a number of practises throughout the presentation that can be used to help develop a little mindfulness on a day to day basis and time for questions after.

Scott Brown

Prior to studying and teaching yoga and meditation, life looked a little different. A background in competitive sport and a career as a city trader had certainly taken its toll on my mind and body.

Life was very much about needing to get somewhere, very busy and not a lot of satisfaction. Luckily a friend introduced me to Andy Puddicombe prior to the days of Headspace when he had a little company called Asunya in Kensington.

I began mindfulness study, which in turn led to yoga study. Within a few years I was out of the city, living on the south coast with my daughter, teaching yoga and mindfulness full time.

The journey is ongoing, now studying with Zen Master Julian Daizan Skinner in the Rinzai tradition of Zen.
